Book Musings: 6 Favourite Female Characters from Harry Potter

While I realize this has been a post that has been done to death with, it some didn’t feel right that I have personally never written this down. Even when I first started reading Harry Potter – my favourite character was not the hero. I was always intrigued by the women in this magical universe. Right from Harry’s mother, Lily to Ron’s mother, Molly Weasley. Countless posts have been written which talk about wanting to know what life for the Mauderers were like before Harry came along. I am definitely one of those people too. But for now, let me tell you about the six women from the Potterverse that I have come to really admire.

Hermione Granger

JK Rowling himself has gone on record saying she would rather have her girls be Hermione Grangers than Pansy Parkinson. It was a conscious decision on her part to make Hermione appear the way she does in the books. (Emma Watson would have probably never bagged the role had Rowling chanced to see how stunningly pretty she already was.) Tagged by Ron as an insufferable-know-it all, and struggling to fit in from the very beginning – Hermione has been the role model for a bunch of us growing up with her. And while it is easy to be influenced by Ron and Harry, I like how Hermione holds her own against the whole world. She is undoubtedly the brightest witch of her age. Even with her tendency to be bossy, Hermione’s quick wit is what saved the golden trio way too many times out from narrow escapes. Miss Granger taught all of us that it was cool to be a bookworm. And reading can save lives. (If you don’t know what I am talking about, you should really read The Deathly Hallows.)

Ginny Weasley

I cannot believe the stark difference there was between book-Ginny and movie-Ginny. Even though she starts off as the shy, little girl with a hopeless crush on her brother’s best friend – she grows into her own character over the course of the books. She couldn’t get two words out in front of him. But when she moves on, she does so with purpose. Ginny Weasley certainly became the champion for young girls everywhere with her interest in Quidditch, her genuine affection for both Harry and her family and her ability to be cute yet fierce. In fact one of the Weasley twins actually refers to their younger sister by saying “size isn’t a guarantee of power.”

Molly Weasley

The woman who raised Fred and George without her turning gray deserves our utmost respect. I especially loved her for being the one who gets rid of Bellatrix once and for all. And the only swearword that is uttered in the entire series is the one she screams at Bella. She might have gotten on our nerves a teensy bit during Order of the Phoenix, but she always thought of Harry as her own son. It was heartwarming how she had opened up her doors and her arms for the orphan boy. Molly Weasley was everything that you would expect a witch mother to be!

Luna Lovegood

Although introduced to us a little later in the series, Luna Lovegood quickly became a fan favourite. She was unafraid to be her own person and had a tendency to believe in the strangest of things. But she did have a lot of wisdom to offer. And Harry was happy to have found a kindred spirit in her. While I personally would have loved to see their friendship grow more - I was quite happy with the development. There are canons where fans have tried to imagine the trauma Snape might have gone through trying to teach Luna potions...which I admit I have laughed at. But I have loved this character for being on the right side and holding her own.

Nymphodora Tonks

Another character who was introduced to us too late. I am also pretty annoyed that the movies never addressed the complex Tonks-Lupin story arc. Even though in the books it was for a fleeting few seconds. She was a fine Auror and she was an exceptionally talented witch. She deserved a happy ending... *sigh*

Bellatrix Lestrange

And last but not the least, I love the eccentric witch Bellatrix. She was absolutely in love with the Dark Lord and there are jokes addressing their relationship. But she was hopelessly devoted to him, and she had done unforgivable things. What makes her one of my favourite females from the series is how she never backs down from going after what she wants. Albeit in a cruel, horrible way. But she definitely had had an interesting story arc.

And with this we include my picks for the six female characters from Harry Potter.
