Book Review: I am big. So what!?

About the Book

Is it only in India where people don’t realize that starting a conversation with, “Oh, you’ve put on weight!” is incredibly rude?
Perhaps I should respond with “Oh,
you’ve become uglier!” so they get the point.
From stores that do not stock clothes my size to unsolicited advice from neighborhood aunties, my life—quite annoyingly—is ruled by the numbers on the scale.
What’s the big deal about being big? You may wonder.
Well, quite a lot, actually.
For starters, you get dumped by the only man you’ve ever loved, social situations go from awkward to embarrassing within seconds, and don’t even get me started on the family’s never-ending search for a suitable groom. They just don’t make men my size these days!
Nevertheless, here I am, about to meet Suitor No. 7. Begrudgingly, of course.
Ride along as I navigate the crazy arranged marriage market. And trust me, it’s crazier when you’re more than a little curvy.

The Review

This book had been sitting happily in my bookshelf for around a year and half, because I remember buying a copy when it first came out. However as it happens with us bookworms and freelancers, juggling way too many job roles, the book got pushed into the back of my book cupboard. (Yes, I have a book cupboard that can put an ordinary bookshelf to shame!) I am digressing though.

I am big. So what!? is the story of Roli who has always been a bit on the heavier side. However she has never let her weight define her. She has always loved fashion and she has taken all the judgmental looks thrown her way in her stride. She grew from her insecurities with her body (being bullied in school), and had gained the confidence that most people seem to lack. For we all fall into the trap of thinking if only I was prettier, more thin, more this and more that. We don’t ever stop to think that we are enough.

Roli goes through the roller coaster journey of being a confident, sassy woman who gets her heartbroken and her confidence shattered when the only boy who ever loved her leaves her, taking her hard earned money with him.

Through the thick and thin of it all, her best friend Monika sticks with her, though they have their own issues to sort out. And in the midst of it all, she meets suitor number seven: Karan Wagh. And right when all hope seems lost in her life, there’s just a hint of it shining like a beacon in a distance.
This was lovely, quick read with character histories and complexities thrown in. It felt as though I was watching a really well made film instead of a drama that drags on for 300+ pages.

I loved reading this book because it reaffirmed my belief that happily ever after does exist. Even though it might take us a little too long to reach it, and what we originally thought would make us happy – might not be the endgame!
